Michel Bastos has struck five goals in 12 Ligue 1 games this season

FC Schalke 04 have signed winger Michel Bastos on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyonnais until the summer of 2014.

Having sold Lewis Holtby to Tottenham Hotspur FC, the German Bundesliga club have moved to strengthen their midfield and the 29-year-old Brazilian international joins fellow loanee, FC Dynamo Kyiv's Raffael, in Gelsenkirchen.

"We are very pleased Michel Bastos is joining us," said Schalke general manager Horst Heldt. "He is an internationally experienced player, has great qualities and can help us right away. Also, he is eligible for the Champions League."

Bastos, who has French citizenship, counts Feyenoord and LOSC Lille among his former teams. He played 98 league games for Lyon, and has made a total of 26 appearances in the UEFA Champions League, scoring five goals. Schalke meet Galatasaray AŞ in the round of 16, with the Turkish side boosted by the acquisitions of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder.
