Gomez on target for Champions Matchday

Wednesday 28 November 2012 12.56 CET
Champions Matchday is back for matchday six

FC Bayern München forward Mario Gomez talks about the art of goalscoring in the latest edition of Champions Matchday magazine. In an exclusive interview, the prolific striker reaffirms there is no such thing as an ugly goal: "Scoring from a metre out is just as beautiful as lobbing a goalkeeper from the halfway line."

For Paris Saint-Germain FC's Thiago Silva defending is an art, and the French club's imperious No2 speaks about keeping it simple and coping with the adulation that has resulted in him being described as the world's best defender.

AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have already qualified for the last 16 and their respective in-form front men, Stephan El Shaarawy and Robert Lewandowski, tell us exclusively about finding their feet in the UEFA Champions League and who they looked up to as kids.

Elsewhere, we ask whether Manchester United FC's signing of Robin van Persie will be the making of Wayne Rooney as the perfect No10 – Diego Maradona, no mean No10 himself, certainly thinks so. We chart the rise of Arsenal FC's Laurent Koscielny, and see why José Callejón is making waves at Real Madrid CF.

Also in the new issue we turn the spotlight on Celtic FC's youth academy, already producing first-team prospects; the technical area is devoted to the old-school style of play that has returned to AFC Ajax under coach Frank de Boer; and Christophe Jallet shows us around his adopted home, Paris.

Issue six is available across Europe from today and also comes in digital versions which can be purchased on Apple Newsstand or Zinio. This season, for the first time, Champions Matchday is available before each round of the UEFA Champions League and you can follow the magazine on Twitter @ChampionsMag.
