Celtic FC provided the story of the night on Wednesday as they defeated FC Barcelona, while FC Bayern München and Juventus notched big wins and Manchester United FC sealed their place in the round of 16.
Celtic were denied a famous point at the Camp Nou a fortnight ago by a last-gasp Jordi Alba effort, but there would be no such late heartbreak this time as 18-year-old Tony Watt's goal proved decisive in a 2-1 victory against the team who have been crowned European champions in two of the last four seasons.
Their Glasgow triumph lifts Neil Lennon's side to within two points of Barcelona with SL Benfica moving into third in Group G after a 2-0 home success against FC Spartak Moskva. Manchester United came from behind to win at SC Braga and retain their perfect record – the only remaining one in the group stage – and secure first place in Group H. Galatasaray AŞ went second in that section with a 3-1 win at CFR 1907 Cluj, Burak Yılmaz scoring a treble to clinch the Turkish club's first away victory in the competition in ten years.
There was late drama at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea FC were twice pegged back by FC Shakhtar Donetsk only for Victor Moses to pop up with a late decisive blow. With Juventus cruising to a 4-0 success against FC Nordsjælland, just one point separates the top three in Group E.
The night's big winners – in terms of margin of victory – were Bayern, who became the first team to take a five-goal lead into the break of a UEFA Champions League game. It finished 6-1 against a point-less, and now eliminated, LOSC Lille, with Claudio Pizarro registering the third fastest hat-trick in the competition's history. Valencia CF again got the better of FC BATE Borisov to join Bayern on nine points at the Group F summit.
