Fürth forced to part company with Büskens

Mike Büskens had been at the Fürth helm for more than three years

Bottom of the Bundesliga with only two wins all season, SpVgg Greuther Fürth have dismissed coach Mike Büskens.

Last season Büskens, 44, steered Fürth into the top flight for the first time in their history, but they are now cut adrift in the relegation zone, 14 points short of safety. "We know that Mike Büskens gave this club great service and that made this decision a very difficult one," said Fürth president Helmut Hack. "We still have a chance to stay in the league and that's why we want to try and give the team a spark."

Büskens was appointed in December 2009, having previously been on the coaching staff at FC Schalke 04 – including two spells as joint interim head coach. Fürth Under-23 trainer Ludwig Preis will take caretaker charge for Sunday's league fixture at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. "The game against Leverkusen has the highest priority now," said sporting director Martin Meichelbeck. "We want to deliver a successful performance and close the gap."
