FC Internazionale Milano are just a point behind third-placed S.S. Lazio following a 3-1 victory against AC Chievo Verona.
AC Milan were in fourth at the start of the day but drop down to fifth following their 1-1 draw at ten-man Cagliari Calcio. Three straight wins had maintained Milan's hopes of earning a top-three finish, but Segundo Ibarbo flicked Daniele Conti's free-kick into the net in the final action of the first half to put Cagliari in front. Mario Balotelli scored from the penalty spot with eight minutes remaining to earn a point for the Rossoneri.
Inter duly capitalised in the late kick-off against Chievo, going two points clear of their city rivals courtesy of goals from Antonio Cassano, Andrea Ranocchia and Diego Milito.
Udinese Calcio's excellent home form continued, with a 1-0 success against Torino FC moving them seventh. Roberto Pereyra struck seven minutes in to give the Zebrette a fourth straight league win at the Stadio Friuli.
UC Sampdoria made it three unbeaten to give Aurelio Andreazzoli an unhappy start to his spell in charge of AS Roma. The capital club's interim coach could not find a first win since replacing Zdeněk Zeman, as Marcelo Estigarribia, Gianluca Sansone and Mauro Icardi gave Sampdoria a 3-1 win. Pescara Calcio were pegged back late on in a 1-1 draw at US Città di Palermo, meaning they were unable to move out of the relegation zone. They remain a point behind Genoa CFC who drew 0-0 at Parma FC.
