1. FSV Mainz 05 were held to a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened FC Augsburg, allowing SC Freiburg – who won 1-0 at home to Fortuna Düsseldorf – to edge ahead in the race to secure UEFA Europa League football next season.

Mainz nonetheless clung on to sixth spot after Hungary forward Ádám Szalai struck his 12th Bundesliga goal of the season to put the visitors ahead on 43 minutes, driving in after Júnior Díaz crossed from the left. Mainz, though, had Shawn Parker dismissed before the break, and Sascha Mölders headed in a second-half equaliser to maintain Augsburg's unbeaten start to 2013.

Elsewhere, Freiburg left it late to see off Düsseldorf and climb into fifth. Jonathan Schmid came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, striking a post, before Pavel Krmaš headed in Max Kruse's corner with three minutes remaining.
