Napoli sink Catania to join Juve at top

Marek Hamšík shows his emotion after putting Napoli ahead

SSC Napoli cranked up the pressure on Serie A leaders Juventus by moving level on points with the Turin club courtesy of a 2-0 success at home to Calcio Catania.

The Partenopei made it five wins from their last six in the league as an efficient first-half performance dealt with a dangerous Catania side who had themselves won their last three coming into the fixture. It took 31 minutes for the breakthrough to come as Juan Zúñiga's driven cross from the left found a way to the back post where Marek Hamšík lay in wait to side-foot in the opener.

Edinson Cavani smashed the crossbar with a free-kick from 25 metres before captain Paolo Cannavaro made things comfortable a minute before the break, neatly turning in Hamšík's pull back from close. The result puts pressure on Juve, who travel to AC Chievo Verona tomorrow, having won just two of their last five in the league.

Earlier in the day 12th-placed Torino FC and 13th-placed UC Sampdoria could not be separated in their 0-0 draw, while on Friday evening Cagliari Calcio won 4-2 at AS Roma, ending Zdeněk Zeman's reign in charge of the Giallorossi.
