Bayer 04 Leverkusen moved up a place into second, but could find themselves 11 points adrift of Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern Munchen come Sunday night after being held to a goalless draw at SC Freiburg.

The match promised to be a tight affair, as Freiburg's only defeat in their last 11 fixtures in all competitions had come against Bayern, while Leverkusen had lost just once in their previous seven Bundesliga outings. So it proved, despite shots from Freiburg's Jan Rosenthal and Leverkusen's André Schürrle striking the upright.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt consolidated their position in fourth with a 2-1 home victory against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Armin Veh's side remain three points ahead of 1. FSV Mainz 05, who won 3-0 at SpVgg Greuther Fürth courtesy of three second-half goals, including a double from Ádám Szalai.

Elsewhere, FC Schalke 04 lost further ground in their hunt for a UEFA Champions League berth following a goalless stalemate at FC Augsburg, while two early goals helped VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1.

Hannover 96 triumphed over VfL Wolfsburg by the same scoreline, despite a first-half red card for debutant Sébastien Pocognoli, signed this week from R. Standard de Liège. On Friday, champions Borussia Dortmund overcame 1. FC Nürnberg 3-0.
