Madrid duo close gap at Liga summit

Sunday 20 January 2013 22.52 CET
Adrián López (centre) broke the deadlock for Atlético

Club Atlético de Madrid consigned Levante UD to a 2-0 defeat courtesy of goals in either half from Adrián López and Koke, while neighbours Real Madrid CF were in free-scoring mood as they saw off Valencia CF 5-0.

FC Barcelona's surprise loss at Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Saturday allowed Diego Simeone's second-placed Atlético to trim the gap at the top to eight points. Adrián broke the deadlock after 32 minutes, before Koke caught the eye with a sumptuous 20-metre strike. The only negative for Atlético came when top goalscorer Falcao limped off with a hamstring injury midway through the second half.

Real Madrid sit seven points further back in third after making light work of Valencia CF thanks to five first-half goals. Gonzalo Higuaín opened the floodgates nine minutes in with a neat left-footed finish, before Ángel Di María and Cristiano Ronaldo both hit doubles ahead of the half-time whistle.

Elsewhere, CA Osasuna climbed off the foot of the table at the expense of RC Deportivo La Coruña, whom they beat 2-1, while Real Valladolid CF prevailed 2-0 at home to Real Zaragoza.
