FC Augsburg increased their chances of avoiding relegation as they picked up just their second win of the season in a 3-2 defeat of Fortuna Düsseldorf, while 1. FC Nürnberg drew 1-1 with Hamburger SV in the day's other game.

Markus Weinzierl's Augsburg had not won on the road in the league in eight attempts before Sunday, but two goals just before the break set them on their way. After early pressure was repelled by the hosts, Sascha Mölders put the visitors ahead on 40 minutes, and Ja-Cheol Koo turned in Tobias Werner's cross from close range five minutes later.

Mölders struck a second with 19 minutes remaining, and despite Stefan Reisinger's late double, Augsburg held on to move within a point of 16th-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Meanwhile, HSV were denied victory at Nürnberg despite Artjoms Rudņevs heading them ahead at the back post with 20 minutes to go. Tomáš Pekhart volleyed in Timo Gebhart's cutback five minutes later to earn a point for the hosts and keep them eight points above the bottom three.
