Barcelona breeze into quarter-finals

Thursday 10 January 2013 23.33 CET
David Villa rejoices after scoring against Córdoba

FC Barcelona booked a Copa del Rey quarter-final with fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Málaga CF by cruising past Córdoba CF 5-0 at Camp Nou.

Second-division Córdoba already trailed 2-0 from the opening leg and fell further adrift when Thiago Alcántara (17) swept in a finish from Alex Song's lobbed pass. David Villa swiftly added a sumptuous second, wrong-footing Alberto Aguilar then flipping a shot over goalkeeper Mikel Saizar from a narrow angle, before driving in number three from the edge of the area on 26 minutes. Alexis Sánchez took centre stage after the break, heading in the fourth from a corner before poking the fifth goal in from close range.

Real Betis Balompié's progress was less straightforward as they needed an 85th-minute winner from Castro Rubén to beat another second-tier outfit, UD Las Palmas, in Seville after the original contest had ended 1-1. Betis will play Club Atlético de Madrid in the last eight after the capital club completed a 2-0 aggregate success with a goalless draw at Getafe CF. The hosts failed to make inroads into the first-leg deficit, their task made more difficult by defender Rafa's 33rd-minute dismissal.
