Javier Hernández stabs in Manchester United's winner, a goal which takes them seven points clear

Manchester United FC extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points after a late Javier Hernández goal gave them a 4-3 victory against Newcastle United FC while champions Manchester City FC lost 1-0 at Sunderland AFC.

United started the traditional Boxing Day programme in England four points clear of City and, despite going behind three times at Old Trafford, they levelled on each occasion before Hernández struck a last-minute winner. The thrilling success helps them increase their lead over City, who went down to a solitary goal from their former winger Adam Johnson.

European champions Chelsea FC made it three wins in a row in the league after Juan Mata gave them victory at Norwich City FC. Rafael Benítez's men are now just four points behind City with a game in hand. Everton FC, West Bromwich Albion FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC are a further two back after they all won to give their fans some festive joy, Spurs' Gareth Bale scoring his first Premier League hat-trick.

In the late game, two Jon Walters goals helped Stoke City FC maintain their unbeaten home record this term as they defeated Liverpool FC 3-1. Elsewhere, Reading FC v Swansea City AFC and Fulham FC v Southampton FC ended in draws.
