SV Werder Bremen moved up to eighth in the table after Marko Arnautović struck his first Bundesliga hat-trick to inspire them to a 4-1 win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
After being on the wrong end of the same scoreline against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Wednesday, Bremen bounced back with Sebastian Prödl nodding the visitors ahead in the snow at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. Arnautović then rolled in a second and although Sejad Salihović pulled one back for Hoffenheim five minutes after the interval, the Austrian forward soon sealed the game for Thomas Schaaf's side. He hammered in a free-kick for his second and drilled into the top corner to complete his treble, while ensuring a fourth straight league defeat for Hoffenheim.
Meanwhile, VfL Wolfsburg fought back against Hamburger SV to earn a 1-1 draw and pull four points clear of the bottom three. Maximilian Beister put HSV ahead 26 minutes in, but Simon Kjær headed in Marcel Schäfer's corner after the break to secure a share of the spoils. Vieirinha almost won it for Wolfsburg as he hit the post late on, but the point moved Hamburg up to ninth, level with Bremen and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.
